Professor Vincent Rotello’s Biosensors for Bacteria Cited in Chemical and Engineering News

biosensors for bacteriaProfessor Vincent Rotello’s CHM sponsored research involving biosensors for bacteria was cited in the June 9, 2011 issue of Chemical and Engineering News. He and his colleagues have published the results of a colorimetric enzyme-nanoparticle conjugate system for detection of microbial contamination in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (DOI:10.1021/ja2021729). By embedding nanoparticle based sensors in a strip of filter paper they were able to detect differences in bacteria level with color changes from yellow to red in about ten minutes. This exciting and significant development has also been reported by the NBC Springfield affiliate, Channel 22 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIZ6_xj8zoY).
